Last month, Hawaii’s Governor Abercrombie signed a bill that recognizes Native Hawaiians as the indigenous people of Hawai’i and establishes a commission to create a roll of qualified Native Hawaiians. Legislators claim that this bill sets the framework for self-determination and increases the possibility of sovereignty.
